Summary

great read!Hard to put down around every corner! Intrigue, folk lore, and everything else crammed into an awesome book! Well told and timed! Not rushed nor drones on needlessly like so many authors do! One of my new king favorites!

More fantastical a novel than I would usually choose, but then again it is Stephen King so it’s a good bet that I’d pick up any new novel he turns out。 I was surprised when Fairy Tale started out so benignly, with nice character development and an interesting friendship between a high school boy and a crotchety old man。 But then the fairy tale portion came into play, and I really wasn’t sure this was my cup of tea。 I made a conscious decision to read and accept the magical parts as I would with More fantastical a novel than I would usually choose, but then again it is Stephen King so it’s a good bet that I’d pick up any new novel he turns out。 I was surprised when Fairy Tale started out so benignly, with nice character development and an interesting friendship between a high school boy and a crotchety old man。 But then the fairy tale portion came into play, and I really wasn’t sure this was my cup of tea。 I made a conscious decision to read and accept the magical parts as I would with any Harry Potter book and that was the key to really enjoying this novel。 This was a vividly imagined story of good vs。 evil in a parallel universe。 Suspend your disbelief and enjoy。 。。。more

Around page 300, this was average King, which is way better than average almost anyone else。 Then this thing took off like a rocket for me, getting better and better, and … I loved the characters, the action, and the ending。

It was kind of like a drab, grotesque, modern version of the Wizard of Oz。 It was worth the 600 page journey, but I wouldn't necessarily go out of my way to tell others they should read it。 It was kind of like a drab, grotesque, modern version of the Wizard of Oz。 It was worth the 600 page journey, but I wouldn't necessarily go out of my way to tell others they should read it。 。。。more

An easy read - no major insights。 Like most in this genre, it was fun。 Probably not memorable。

This was good, but I felt it never really got going。 I was waiting for it to get more "King-ey" but then it wrapped。 Pleasant change of pace though for the most part。 This was good, but I felt it never really got going。 I was waiting for it to get more "King-ey" but then it wrapped。 Pleasant change of pace though for the most part。 。。。more

20 words? Too many。 But I’ll try。 This tale will stay with me。 Of course not all of it by any means。 I can’t recall big chunks of the Brothers K or Moby Dick。 But I’m a better human being for having loved both。 This story is also lovable for what it leaves behind。 Thanks, Dr。 King

DNF。 This was a tedious slog to get through, and I eventually couldn’t muster it。 Way, way too sluggish。 Great characters as usual with King, but with nowhere to go, it doesn’t matter。

King is an absolute master at creating vivid characters, both good and evil。 As usual with King, the book begins with real-world situations that are completely believable and absorbing。 King is also a talented and meticulous writer。 But unfortunately the plot after roughly the second half became incredibly predictable and boring。 I really wanted to like this story but, it was a little too long and rambling at times。 King’s ability to tell a story that makes you feel like you’re part of the adven King is an absolute master at creating vivid characters, both good and evil。 As usual with King, the book begins with real-world situations that are completely believable and absorbing。 King is also a talented and meticulous writer。 But unfortunately the plot after roughly the second half became incredibly predictable and boring。 I really wanted to like this story but, it was a little too long and rambling at times。 King’s ability to tell a story that makes you feel like you’re part of the adventure is unparalleled… I definitely think it’s still a worthwhile listen - just don’t expect anything new。 If you go into it with that understanding, you won’t be too disappointed。 Even weak King isn’t terrible。 。。。more

This book reads like a very good YA novel, but I would recommend it for adults as well。 I enjoyed it because King and fantasy are favorites of mine and because I appreciated all the movie and literary references throughout。 There were periodic narrator asides, however, that were distracting and repeatedly broke the suspension of reality required to stay in the story。 For example, fairly early in the novel, a character gives the “ok” sign to another character, but then the text includes a parenth This book reads like a very good YA novel, but I would recommend it for adults as well。 I enjoyed it because King and fantasy are favorites of mine and because I appreciated all the movie and literary references throughout。 There were periodic narrator asides, however, that were distracting and repeatedly broke the suspension of reality required to stay in the story。 For example, fairly early in the novel, a character gives the “ok” sign to another character, but then the text includes a parenthetical explaining that the ok sign is also used by white supremacists, which is not what these characters intended。 This bizzare non sequiter took me completely out of the story。 Quite frustrating! Similar asides occur throughout the novel almost until the end。 Perhaps it is the mark of an over-aggressive editor because it is hard to believe that King would do this to his own creation。 。。。more

Good plot, great characters。 You have to read all the long descriptions of the surroundings to capture the atmosphere and fairy tale references。 Love Radar。

Very cool。 I loved this story and it’s ending。 But I will admit I wished the story had dealt more with the other world。

This was a great hero's journey with some fairy tale nods。 I absolutely loved the first third of this novel, but the middle just kind of fell flat for me。 However, it's still worthy! I have to say that my emotions for Radar run high, and her relationship with the two main characters in the novel are its strength。 This definitely makes me want to pick up "The Talisman。"I'm not sure why, but King loves to set up his fantasy novels in the second person, but it really grates my nerves。 It was a crit This was a great hero's journey with some fairy tale nods。 I absolutely loved the first third of this novel, but the middle just kind of fell flat for me。 However, it's still worthy! I really enjoyed this one。 I'm kind of a sucker for changing around fairy tales and this does a good job of it。 I'm giving it 5 stars because it has one particular element that is different from a lot of King books。 I won't spoil what it is, but I will say, sometimes wishes do come true and mine did with this story。 I really enjoyed this one。 I'm kind of a sucker for changing around fairy tales and this does a good job of it。 I'm giving it 5 stars because it has one particular element that is different from a lot of King books。 I won't spoil what it is, but I will say, sometimes wishes do come true and mine did with this story。 。。。more

I am 68 years old。 For decades now I have been trying to get people to open their minds to the writing of Stephen King。 Most people glom onto the fact that King's writing is in the horror genre and say, "Oh, that's not for me。" Critic's throughout the years get hung up on the genre part too。 It makes me crazy。 After my mother died, my sister found envelopes for all four of us kids。 They held treasure。 Our first haircut locks, cards and letters we wrote to our parents through the years, report ca I am 68 years old。 For decades now I have been trying to get people to open their minds to the writing of Stephen King。 Most people glom onto the fact that King's writing is in the horror genre and say, "Oh, that's not for me。" Critic's throughout the years get hung up on the genre part too。 It makes me crazy。 After my mother died, my sister found envelopes for all four of us kids。 They held treasure。 Our first haircut locks, cards and letters we wrote to our parents through the years, report cards and other mementos。 I found a report card in which my mom and my teacher, during my 5th grade year, wrote about how great it was that I was reading less!!! By that time I was reading at an 11th grade level。 I would rather read than do anything else。 I am disabled, although that never stopped me from going to regular school and graduating at the top of my class for my B。A。 and nearly as close with my Masters degree from NYU。 But it did impact my socialization in my childhood。 Books were my saving grace。 I could go anywhere and meet anyone in the world of books。 I discovered that, if a writer was really good, I could leave the world of hospitals, surgery and body-casts behind。 The world around me would just go away and I could fly in space, be a sleuth, rescue people in awful situations。 I knew Nancy Drew, Cherry Ames; Student nurse, Flight Nurse, etc; Rode Black Beauty, wondered at the adventures of Gulliver, cried my eyes out (and still do) over Old Yeller。 Sometime during the 3rd grade I discovered Space。 I read a book about a boy who stowed away on a ship where, it was either his father, or an uncle, was one of the astronauts。 I've been trying to remember the book for years。 This book led to a lifetime love of Science Fiction。 Anne McCaffrey, Alan Dean Foster, Andre Norton, Arthur C。 Clarke, Ben Bova, Brian Aldiss, Dean Koontz, Frank Herbert, Gordon R Dickson, Tolkien, Philip Jose Farmer, Roger Zelazny, Robert A Heinlein。, and so many more。 Science fiction and Fantasy took me to wonderful places。 I had other genres that interested me too, but Sci-fi/fantasy and horror delighted me。 They still do。 My all-time favorite was, and still is, Stephen King。 I have read every book he has written that I know about。 Not a one disappoints me。 I fall right into a book by him and leave the real world behind。 His characters become people I know and care about。 His writing style is so good that it feels like I am right there with the characters。 I feel sorry for some, scared for others and happy when it all turns out okay。 It doesn't always turn out okay, and that is one of the things that makes it so much more real。 Life doesn't always work out okay。Fairy Tale was a book I read in a day and a half。 I fell into it and didn't want to come back out。 I adored the concept of a hidden way to another world。 I want to find that place one day。 The story is wonderful。 Heroes and heroines abound, evil creatures take away beloved characters, animals and insects are intelligent, and good overcomes evil。。。for a time, at least。 Mr。 King's ability to bring all this to life in my world is what I try to explain to people who poo-poo horror。 Forget the genre, it's the story! It's the magic in words that transport you to another place。 Not necessarily a better place, but maybe a place where the things in your life turn out differently; a second chance。 There are times, when I'm reading a book by another author, where the writing is poor, and I find myself jerked out of the story by a badly written sentence。 I dislike the feeling so much。 This is the thing that Stephen King has that people need to focus on。 His writing is so smooth that you forget where you really are and slide, seamlessly, into the world he has created。 It's magic, and Stephen King is magical。 After at least 50 years or more I still love that magic, and I love Stephen King。 。。。more
